STORY
Pottersfield Press was founded in 1979 and is located at Lawrencetown Beach, Nova Scotia, Canada on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.

Pottersfield specializes in books about Atlantic Canada with a focus on Mi'kmaq and African Nova Scotian, but also publishes a wide range of fiction and nonfiction titles in the areas of history, biography, health, environment, poetry and books about the sea.

Here at Pottersfield Press, we officially want to congratulate Lesley Choyce for being the 2022 Atlantic Legacy Award Recipient at the Atlantic Book Awards.
The 2022 Atlantic Legacy Award was established to honour those who have made a lasting contribution to the development of the literary arts in Atlantic Canada. Lesley has certainly done that. As founder and publisher of Pottersfield Press and the author of more than 100 novels, books of non-fiction, children’s books, young adult novels, and poetry for adults, teens, and children, he has certainly created and continues to create a valuable legacy.
“As a writer, a publisher and a teacher of writing, I have a lot of people to thank for this” says Lesley during his speech at the Atlantic Book Awards Gala held on June 9. “First of all, The Awards Committee for choosing the guy who once was considered by many to be anything but respectable. Thank you. Organizations along the way who have been most supportive to me: The Writers Federation of Nova Scotia, The Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association, The Writers Union of Canada. All amazing people. On the teaching side, Dalhousie University, where I was once the youngest member of the English Department and now am the oldest. And especially Dal’s Transition Year Program where I’ve had the great good luck of working with so many young and old writers from the Black and Mi’kmaw communities for nearly forty years. Special thanks to everyone at Nimbus Publishing who have distributed our Pottersfield Press books these many years. I’d be lost without you.”

Concluding his speech, Lesley shares his early days in Nova Scotia. “I first set foot on Nova Scotian soil, sandy soil on a beach not far from here, in 1970. I felt like I’d arrived home to a place I’d never been before. I moved here for good in 1978 and started writing poetry and novels and decided to start publishing the work of Atlantic writers. What I want to say most is that I felt included and accepted from the very first time I came here and always have ever since. I never once felt like an outsider. Thank you all for that. I know that not everyone in this country or this province feels that sense of belonging and inclusion. But, given the times we live in, it’s the most important task we have in whatever field we are in. Let’s treat everyone the way I was treated when I came here many decades ago. Let’s make everyone feel at home."
